AmazonSmile closing down in February 2023

by | Jan 19, 2023

The charity sector’s smile just turned upside down.

AmazonSmile is closing down after 10 years of providing vital donations to over 1 million charities worldwide.

Amazon has decided that they can make a more significant and lasting impact if they invest in specific areas and focus their philanthropic efforts in the communities that their employees live and work.

It’s why AmazonSmile will be closing by February 20, 2023.

What this means for patient groups using AmazonSmile

Up until February 20, 2023, customer purchases made via AmazonSmile will continue to accrue funds for your charity like normal. To help charities plan ahead, Amazon will give your organisation a one-time payment that’s equivalent to six months of payments based on what you accrued in 2022 through AmazonSmile. The timing of this final payment will be approximately 60 to 90 days after February 20, 2023.

How to raise funds for your organisation without AmazonSmile

Charity Digital has found eight alternatives to AmazonSmile that can help you fill the funding gap!

Amazon has also launched a new Amazon for Charities store that allows charities to raise money by selling merchandise on Amazon and collecting 100% of the profits.

To date, the following charities have created a charity store on Amazon:

  • Macmillan Cancer Support
  • Royal British Legion
  • National History Museum (NHM)
  • Marie Curie
  • Cancer Research UK
