Meet our new graphic design intern, Freya!

by | Oct 7, 2021 | Meet the team

For this week’s blog, we want to introduce you to our new graphic design intern, Freya! Freya is jointly interning with Findacure and Costello Medical. Get to know Freya and do say hello!

What were you doing before you joined Costello and Findacure?

I was previously working in communications and marketing across different sectors, from social housing to non-profits in the arts sector. Before this I completed my Undergraduate Degree in English literature at the University of East Anglia in 2017, which stemmed from my interest in books and writing. Last year I took the leap to pursue a career change and complete a full-time graphic design course in Sussex, and I feel lucky to say I’m now in a fantastic intern design role with two incredible companies!

Why did you choose to join the Costello Medical and Findacure team?

I have always enjoyed working in companies working with a strong social purpose. My time spent working with residents in social housing was a particularly formative experience for me and gave me a keen interest in working for companies that are focused on meeting people’s needs, whether it be through awareness raising or improving access to services. Findacure has such a strong reputation as a beneficiary centered charity, so it was the perfect organisation to be part of.

Costello Medical is a fantastic organisation to grow my skills as a designer thanks to the diverse range of projects the team takes on and the level of autonomy I have over my work. Everyone is encouraged to develop skills that are important to them and I love working somewhere that has built a reputation from having an incredibly high attention to detail in all areas of work.

What do you want to achieve most at Costello Medical and Findacure?

There is a myth that a designer just makes things look pretty. To me design should make practical solutions in any project, and the fact that Findacure view design in this way too is exciting. My ultimate goal is to design materials that empower patient groups and the wider rare disease community and hopefully create an example for other charities and similar organisations in terms of presenting accessible information.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

You’ll often find me reading, watching a film and cooking but I also love being out and about and exploring – whether it’s at a museum or gallery or going for a walk. I also love to be creative outside of work and create digital drawings on my iPad.

What’s your favourite book/film/TV show and why?

This is tough one. If I had to pick my favourite fiction it would be Rachel Cusk’s The Outline Trilogy. It’s such a meditative, observant and absorbing piece of work.

My favourite film genres are dramas and coming of age films, with some recent favourites including Eighth Grade, Sound of Metal, and Saint Frances.
