Meet Chloe, our new Scientific Projects Officer!

by | Jan 13, 2023 | Meet the team

We’re so excited to introduce our new Scientific Officer, Chloe who joined the Beacon team in November 2022!

Get to know one of the newest members of our team below and email her at chloe@rarebeacon.org to say hello.

Welcome to the rare family, Chloe!

What were you doing before you joined Beacon?

Before joining Beacon, I worked as a Care Assistant in a residential nursing home. Within this role I was helping residents with personal care, and assisting the nursing staff with infection control.

Why did you choose to join the Beacon team?

Due to personal experience of the issues patients and their family members can face in search of a diagnosis and treatment, alongside a background in genetics, I was drawn to Beacon and their mission.

Patients should be at the centre of research, but (at the moment) a lot of the information published is expensive to access or difficult to understand. This makes health literacy, as well as understanding new treatments or results of research difficult (sometimes inaccessible) for the patients that need it.

Beacon’s work helps remove this issue and encourages patients and patient groups to speak up for themselves.

What do you want to achieve most at Beacon?

I am really excited to be here and am looking forward to working on the REMEDi4ALL project. I hope that I can put my science background to use to help create a platform that patient groups, academics and more can use; finding new ways to discover treatments for rare diseases.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work I like working with my hands, my grandmother was a seamstress and she taught my how to sew when I was little. Most of my current projects have been dresses for friends from university.

What’s your favourite book/film/TV show and why?

My current favourite book is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I received this book as a Christmas gift, it’s a modernised retelling of a Greek myth. The writing is beautiful really and you root for the main characters.

And that’s a wrap!

We hope you enjoyed getting to know a little more about one of our newest Beaconites, Chloe.

Remember to email her to say hello and join us in welcoming Chloe to the rare family!
